Story Summary:	This is the story of an isolated Alaskan town that is plunged into darkness for a month each year when the sun sinks below the horizon. As the last rays of light fade, the town is attacked by a bloodthirsty gang of vampires bent on an uninterrupted orgy of destruction. Summary:	Days of Night is the latest entry in a long line of vampire horror movies. Vampires have sort of gone out of vogue in the horror world recently, replaced by decomposing, lumbering zombies. Director David Slade�s movie tries to get vampires back in the thick of the scare business, and he has a gimmick. Days of Night takes place in an isolated Alaskan town which, since it�s so far north, spends 30 days of the year in complete darkness. As gimmick�s go, it�s a good one. As the sun sinks toward the horizon for the last time, most of the tiny town�s 500 or so residents leave, preferring migration south rather than 30 days without sun. Some however, always choose to remain and the small town�s sheriff Eben Oleson (Josh Hartnett) marks the beginning of their 30 days of dark by adjusting their population sign to reflect its 152 remaining residents. Meanwhile, the vampires are already plotting. Someone has begun vandalizing key areas of the little village�s infrastructure. Satellite phones are stolen, and burned. The town�s helicopter is mysteriously damaged beyond compare. Something is afoot, but before Oleson can figure it out, the sun is gone and it�s game over. The vampires come on the town suddenly, and in force. The power goes out, the phones go down, the internet is gone. The nearest town is 80 miles away, there is no sun, there is no hope, no chance of defense, no semblance of order. This isn�t a siege movie where the brave sheriff holes up in a police station with a group of survivors and defends them against an attacking evil. With the disappearance of light, the handful of residents left in the dark become rabbits, helpless scared creatures whose only hope is a quick death. Except it takes them a few hours to figure this out. Meanwhile, the vampires' attack is an orgy of brutal violence and blood spatter as humans run out into the street brandishing weapons, mistakenly thinking they can actually fight. Each attempt at self-defense is marked by a red stain on the snow, and soon the defenders are gone and the vampires move on to crashing through houses and killing everyone else. By then Sheriff Oleson and the few people he has running with him have started to realize out they have no hope, and like the prey they are, go to ground praying that they can wait for the sun�s return. . . . read all

Summary:	There�s a notable absence of leather coats and sexy teasing of victims in 30 Days of Night , a gleefully gory vampire pic with real bite directed by David Slade ( Hard Candy ) and based on the graphic novel by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith. The vampires of 30 Days are nearly robotic feeding machines and absolutely nothing like the cool vamps of Buffy , Angel and the like. If it�s blood, guts and brutal killings you�re looking for, then 30 Days of Night fits the bill. Only a handful of Barrow folks survive the initial attack by the vampires who invade the town only after a crazy man longing to be a vampire (played by Ben Foster who is so good at playing loony) does all the dirty work. The Stranger� steals and then burns everyone's cell phones making communication with the outside world difficult. He also kills off all the dogs so that they can�t alert their owners about the oncoming invasion of vampires. Those lucky enough to elude the vampires first attack include Eben�s estranged wife Stella ( Melissa George ), Eben�s younger brother Jake (Mark Rendall) and a few other assorted Barrowians (or maybe it�s Barrowers). The ragtag collection of survivors must use all their skill and cunning to escape from being made into vampire chow. Danny Huston makes one of the creepiest vampires in film history as Marlow, the leader of the vampire pack. Huston�s just recognizable beneath the jagged vampire teeth and scary vampire makeup. Delivering choppy bits of dialogue in a strange, made-up vampire language, Huston is pure evil. When he tells one afternoon snack there�s no God, Huston cements his place in movie vampire history. Josh Hartnett�s very convincing in the role of sheriff, carrying the majority of the scenes involving the Barrow survivors on his shoulders with no problem at all. George and Hartnett work well as a couple experiencing major marriage problems, and the rest of the cast do more than just scream and run around like chickens with their heads cut off. . . . read all

Summary:	In Barrow, Alaska, the northernmost town in the United States, the winter sun sets and does not rise for 30 days and nights. From the darkness comes an evil force that strikes terror on the town, and all hope is pinned on a husband-and-wife cop team. How could I not go to see 30 Days of Night ? We're coming up on Halloween, the air is getting crisper (at least after dark) and I happen to be reading a book (in my off-hours) called The Terror , which - like this movie - takes place in the frigid Arctic when the nights are measured by calendar rather than clock. In the actual town of Barrow, Alaska (300 miles north of the Arctic Circle), the sun disappears from view on Nov. Given this, it's clear that the movie takes place in a slightly skewed version of Barrow; in addition to the variance in the length of the winter night, the population in the real town (put at 4,065 in a 2006 census) seems markedly greater than that depicted in the film, where all the townsfolk live within about a block's radius. And then, of course, there's those nasty vampires. Sheriff Eben Oleson (Josh Hartnett) has warning signs at his figurative fingertips - the town is about to enter into its dark winter isolation, during which even the nearby airport closes down (guess they've never heard of instruments and landing lights) and suddenly the community's isolation appears to have been enhanced by outside agency: someone has purloined all the cell phones and burned them in a pit; the local sled dogs have been brutally slaughtered; and the community's emergency services helicopter is mysteriously disabled. The cars and trucks still work just fine, but let's not get technical. From out of nowhere, a stranger arrives. The stranger is Ben Foster, fresh from his dapper role as gunslinger Charlie Prince in 3:10 to Yuma - but his character in this movie is considerably less dapper. In fact, he has really bad teeth and a hankering for raw hamburger, two traits guaranteed to put the damper on dapper. What it boils down to is: he's doin' the Renfield thang, prepping the Barrow human population for the imminent arrival of his vampire masters. . . . read all
