Story Summary:	Nicole broke up with Matt months ago and is now engaged to someone else. He's very good-looking and has no trouble finding other lovers, but that doesn't help because he's still obsessed with wanting her back. Then he gets the inspiration that swearing off sex for Lent (all forms of sexual activity, even kissing or masturbation) will give him the perspective he needs. So of course a few days later he meets a woman and they fall in love. Now Matt sees his vow as a personal matter, and won't even tell her about it, but his friends think otherwise, and now the complications begin...

Denzel Washington has told how he was left battered and bruised from filming American Gangster - not because of Aussie hard man Russell Crowe but his on-screen mother. He probably would have succeeded if it hadn't been for the casting of the leads, Josh Hartnett (PEARL HARBOR) and Shannyn Sossamon (A KNIGHT'S TALE), two beautiful but bland actors. The movie's jokes work in spite of them, not because of them. The cute plot concerns a guy, Matt Sullivan (Hartnett), having so much trouble getting over his ex-girlfriend, Nicole (Vinessa Shaw), that he decides to give up sexual activity of any kind for Lent. Of course, the women at his company try to attack him at every water cooler in order to break his vow. One even spreads her legs on the company's photocopy machine in front of him and writes her phone number on the copy of her panties. Meanwhile, the men in his office spend their time running a betting pool on the Internet that attracts gamblers from as far away as Bangladesh. About the only thing his co-workers don't try is putting an apple pie on his desk. One assumes that the office must be in a special sexual-harassment-lawsuit-free zone of San Francisco. Thanks to the loan of a fabric softener sheet at a local coin laundry, Matt meets Erica (Sossamon). Initially Erica, who wears nerdy, boyish clothes, seems like the perfect platonic playmate. Matt's first indication that his celibacy with her may prove difficult comes when he asks her occupation. She's a cybernanny who spends her entire day surfing porno sites in order to figure out which ones should be labeled as off-limits to kids. As Matt comes down the home stretch, he starts to shake like a heroin junkie going cold turkey. As the big day gets closer, it's not clear whether he'll make it or not. It's very funny, terrifically lively and, considering how awful it might have been, surprisingly tender in its portrait of a young guy who learns sensitivity the hard way. Hartnett shows here a breezy command of his charming, likable character. It is a reminder of his talent and versatility. The quality writing, delivered by likable Hartnett and his talented co-stars, makes up for the sometimes flat production. A richly humorous background is provided by well-played eccentric minor characters. The movie is both exhilarating and depressing. The trouble is, I can't figure out which is more important. A curious entry in the current wave of raunchy youth comedies. It's refreshingly free of scatological humor, but even while aiming higher, it can't raise its focus above the belt. Sets out to demonstrate that life is about more than having sex. Inadvertently - I think - it ends up showing us just the opposite. As if we didn't already know. This pretty but witless movie is well-produced, slickly directed - full of jokes about hot dudes and hot babes pitched right at the "American Pie" crowd. Builds up comic force in its first half. But then it blows it, leaving the audience feeling unsatisfied. The film's biggest problem, however, is its naive inability to understand that sex comedies, to amuse, must be about more than sex. Doesn't do much to further distinguish Lehmann's career. As for those of us waiting for the year's first worthwhile date movie, the wait continues. It's too mild to be crass; it's clumsy. Lehmann has made what amounts to an anti-sex sex comedy, the first youth sex comedy made to be enjoyed by those creepy abstinence teens.
