Story Summary:	A small VHS only video store faces foreclosure in a poor community. While watching the store for the owner, a blundering employee's friend accidentally erases all of the tapes. In order to keep their blunder from becoming apparent, the duo of Mos Def and Jack Black begin remaking the films themselves using homemade special effects and outdated filming techniques.

Michel Gondry's current exhibition at Deitch Projects in SoHo is more than an extravagant promotion for the new movie he wrote and directed, "Be Kind Rewind. This project, also called "Be Kind Rewind," is a serious but flawed effort to carry over into the real world the film's idealistic, anti-commercial fantasy of do-it-yourself creativity. In the film, which opened nationwide last Friday, a couple of dopey fellows played by Mos Def and Jack Black create their own wacky remakes of mainstream movies. The tapes in the neighborhood video store, where Mos Def's character is temporarily in charge, have been erased by the magnetized body of Black's character. Naturally, their remakes turn out to be a hit with the local customers. For Deitch Projects, Gondry has built a system in which people can make their own communal movies in the cheerfully amateurish style personified by his cinematic heroes. In the gallery's garage-size industrial space, behind a painted exterior replicating the film's decrepit storefront, is a miniature version of a Hollywood back lot. Different sections mimic a doctor's office, a restaurant, a junkyard and so on. Groups of 5 to 15 people, who must register in advance, follow a structured program to complete a short movie in two hours. Gondry's written step-by-step instructions direct the group first to appoint a leader and a camera person, then decide on the film's genre, define its characters and determine the plot. Next, group members chart the action scene by scene and create signs for the titles and credits. Then they select props and costumes from a motley assortment on hand. Finally, using a small video camera provided by the gallery, they shoot their movie, editing as they go. E KIND REWIND captures another kind of romance. Both the writer-director and his characters are in love with the cinematic medium itself, and their devotion shows. E KIND REWIND doesn't reach the heights of ETERNAL SUNSHINE, but it doesn't seem to be aiming for that genius. This is simply a hilarious comedy, fun for film fans of all stripes, which celebrates the sheer joy of watching and making films. And the film ought to be funny, with Mike and Jerry recreating those films as home movies. But somehow it�s not, the laughs are very thin on the ground. Summary:	The DVD for "Be Kind Rewind" claims that the film has been "Sweded," just like the flicks recreated by Jack Black and Mos Def in Michel Gondry's love song to low-fi filmmaking. Unfortunately, the actual disc shows little sign of being remixed by creative hands. This release offers minimal behind-the-scenes material, beyond the option to switch from full screen to widescreen and a menu design that utilizes the film's cardboard-chic visual theme. Special features consist only of the original theatrical trailer and "Passaic Mosaic," a 10-minute documentary about the city of Passaic, NJ, which hosted the shoot. The piece shows the local community's integration with the production, working as extras and interacting with cast and crew. It's touching, well-constructed and ties in nicely to the film's plot, which also sees the local community getting involved with the "Sweding" process. However, the DVD release is notable more for what's missing than what's there. There's no celebration of the film's no-budget Hollywood remakes, which included "Ghostbusters," "Robocop" and "Driving Miss Daisy. These clips have been available on the film's official YouTube channel for months and it's hard to imagine what copyright concerns would have prevented their inclusion. The disc doesn't even feature Michel Gondry's personally Sweded version of the "Be Kind Rewind" trailer - perhaps it's being held hostage for a future, more extensive release. But given film's lukewarm reviews and quick exit from theaters, it's likely that Sweding - and "Be Kind" - will remain an online phenomenon.
