Story Summary:	In London, Iris Simpkins write a wedding column in a newspaper and has an unrequited love for her colleague Jasper Bloom. Nearby Christmas, she is informed that Jasper is engaged and will marry another colleague, and her life turns head over heels. In Los Angeles, the movie-trailers maker Amanda Woods has just broken with her unfaithful boyfriend Ethan and wants to forget him. Amanda access a house exchange website, and impulsively swaps her mansion for Iris' cottage in Surrey for the holiday along the next two weeks. While in Surrey, Amanda meets Iris' widow brother and book editor Graham and they fall in love for each other. Meanwhile Iris meet her next door neighbor, the ninety year old screenplay writer Arthur, who helps her to retrieve her self-esteem, and the film composer Miles, and they fall in love for each other.

Summary:	This one's more of a working vacation. "The Holiday" is a 131-minute romantic comedy for those who, if they had their way, would still be watching "Love Actually. Star power is not nothing, though, and "The Holiday" has that covered, thanks to its toothsome cast - they're a dental paradise, this lot - and to a premise (L. Nancy Meyers elaborates the daylights out of her story anyway. The result is a 90-minute tale mistakenly fitted for a two-hours-plus-sized girdle. Cameron Diaz plays Amanda, who runs her own movie-trailer production house. All work and no sex, this brittle Hollywood specimen disc 2 stars (out of four) overs her boyfriend (Edward Burns, out of the picture early) has been cheating, and just like that, she's alone for the holidays. In London, meantime, doormat Iris (Kate Winslet) writes the wedding column for the Daily Telegraph. She pines for a co-worker (Rufus Sewell) she dated, briefly, three years ago. Even with the ebullient Winslet doing the pining - she's the best excuse to see "The Holiday" - you wonder if Meyers was so focused on establishing her main characters as frustrated, lonely and wanting that she forgot about the "interesting" part. Once Iris finally lands in sunny, smog-free L. Amanda settles into her provincial vacation cottage outside London, the fish-out-of-water montages begin. Here's Iris playing air-guitar with a pillow and marveling at the size of Amanda's plasma TV. There's Amanda having the devil's own time driving on the "wrong" side of the road. Amanda finds love with Iris' dashing book-editor brother Graham (Jude Law), whose big secret provides the requisite third-act complication. Iris attracts the wagging-eyebrows interest of film composer Miles (Jack Black). A, she is replying to a message from Jasper on her blackberry. However, the film is set for Xmas 2006 and December the 18th 2006 isn't a Wednesday, neither is December 2005. Air owned by Amanda (Cameron Dias), the ebullient head of a company that makes movie trailers, who has just thrown out her latest useless partner. The girls swap places and in no time Amanda is romancing Iris's dishy brother Graham (Jude Law). Meanwhile in Hollywood Iris is getting to know Miles (Jack Black), a workmate of Amanda's, and a 90 year old neighbour, Arthur (Eli Wallach) who happens to be one of Hollywood's forgotten great writers. One can of course dismiss this sort of stuff as glossy fairy floss because basically, despite all the money and talent expended in making it, that is what it is - "Love, Improbable. This film is rather long for its genre, over two hours, and it does drag a bit, as if the scriptwriters couldn't decide how to end it. However it must be admitted that Kate Winslett and Jude Law are always interesting to watch on screen and Cameron Diaz has a nice line in parodying some of her earlier performances. Rufus Sewell shows he can out-act Hugh Grant any day (not hard I guess). It was nice though to see Eli Wallach, a great Hollywood tough guy of old, who at 90 seems to have the market for nice old buffers sewn up, as the neighbour. Perhaps I am setting my standard too high, but compared to "Four Weddings and a Funeral", "Notting Hill", "Bedrooms and Hallways" and even "Love, Actually", this was a pile of mush, far too sweet and sticky and nice. Good comedy needs a certain bite (a reality bite, a bit of astringency, whereas what we are given here is pure fairyland escapism. How do you get over a horrible relationship? Well, you can drown your sorrows in ice cream and hours of watching lousy television programs. Or, if you have the financial resources, you can do what the leading ladies of The Holiday do: exchange homes with someone you've never met who lives in a city far, far away from the man who killed your desire for romance. Summary:	It may not be proof that miracles do happen, but with Something's Gotta Give (2003), the writer-director Nancy Meyers took a leap from the processed screwball of movies like her 2000 hit What Women Want to something zesty and stirring and wittily adult. It's as if Rachael Ray had blossomed into Alice Waters. Now Meyers is back with The Holiday , and I'm sad to report that it's just a cookie-cutter chick flick, albeit one made with some fancy butter and powdered frosting. Because of the too self-consciously ''old-fashioned'' Nora Ephron premise: Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet as neurotic singletons, one a highly stressed Los Angeles editor of movie trailers, the other a deeply tender London newspaper reporter, who agree over the Internet to swap homes for Christmas vacation. Because of the grating, insecurity-lit-up-in-neon way that Diaz overplays the role of a too-organized, high-functioning, no-tears yuppie who keeps imagining her life as a blockbuster trailer of romantic clichés - except that the schlocky fantasy trailer doesn't look all that different from the movie we're watching. Bridget Jones dithering until you practically have to squint to believe that a 21st-century woman this beautiful could be this much of a doormat. And because of how each actress gets one embarrassing rock & roll air-guitar scene. And I haven't even mentioned the men. Okay, I know that male movie critics aren't allowed to complain that a chick flick is formulaic; it would be like me griping that the latest issue of Cosmo includes too many Wild Lovemaking Positions You've Never Seen Before. Yet I now officially expect more from Nancy Meyers. There's no denying her facility, though. The dialogue has a perky synthetic sheen, and with the exception of Diaz, Meyers brings out the best in her actors - Winslet, her sexy vulnerability aglow; Jack Black, as the film-score composer who woos her, dialing down his mad energy to reveal the sweetness beneath; and Jude Law, as Diaz's suitor, too chivalrous to resist as a man too good to be true. Summary:	As Ron Burgundy would say, “I am a man! A man who invented the wheel and fire! And then he would go into some nonsensical rant about the size of women’s brains, but I am not going to do that. Stating that I am a man is supposed to somehow reaffirm my masculinity right before I go on to talk about The Holiday , which is set to be released on Friday. It stars Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Jack Black. During this review I will use such emasculating words as “cute” and “charming” and I may also refer to Jack Black as “adorable”. But setting these atrocities of manhood aside, I would like to actually talk about the movie. If you have seen the trailer for The Holiday , you are already thinking that it is just another chick flick released just in time to remind all of those without love in their life that it is Christmas and they are doomed to be alone. It is also just in time to remind guys like me that it is Christmas and I do have someone in my life – whom I have yet to get any sort of gift. But this movie, while it does take place during Christmas, is less about the holidays and more about taking a holiday from your life, and how it can ultimately save you from yourself. Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet play two women on the opposite ends of the world (Los Angeles and London) who are alike in one particular way – they are both losers in love. Amanda (Diaz) is a neurotic and sometimes over the top movie trailer producer who throws out her boyfriend (Ed Burns) who cheated on her because he was sexually starved. Iris (Winslet) is a compassionate and intelligent journalist who has just found out that the man she has been hopelessly in love with for years is getting engaged to another woman. Both women need a break from their lives, and they very quaintly meet online to arrange an exchange of their lives houses for two weeks. Jude Law plays Iris’ brother, who comes drunk-knocking on Amanda’s door and then woos her with his slurring charm. It is a character, for Law that is a bit different than what we have seen from him in the past. He brings back a bit of the coyness that we saw in Closer , with a dash of fun. Ladies will enjoy the immense screen time that he gets, and the various stages of undress that he finds himself in throughout the film. . . . read all
