Summary:	I'll get to the point: The main, if not only, reason to see ''The Machinist" is for Christian Bale's title performance, and even then you have to be a fan of hardcore martyrdom in the service of craft. As Trevor Reznik, a machine-shop tool operator who hasn't slept in more than a year, Bale is a frighteningly gaunt shadow of his usual self. His eyes are far back in his sockets, staring paranoically; his bones seem ready to break through skin. Every step seems like agony. The actor dropped 60 pounds to bottom out at 130, a feat that goes beyond De Niroesque transformation into the valley of masochism. Says one of Trevor's co-workers, ''If you were any thinner, you wouldn't exist. Sadly, the same has to be said about the movie, a stylish but fatally shallow puzzler that suggests a ''Twilight Zone" episode filmed on the leftover sets of ''Seven. The factory where Trevor works is a dank no-man's-land of rusted steel and welding sparks, a place where everyone is a candidate for Industrial Accident of the Week. The unlucky winner early on is Miller (Michael Ironside), a gruff press operator who loses his arm to one of the machines, and while Trevor's co-workers blame him, Trevor is sure a hulking character named Ivan is responsible. No one has actually seen Ivan, though, so obviously it's part of a plot to drive the hero crazy. Back at his dungeon of an apartment (decor by early David Lynch), Trevor's consolations are few. He has a girlfriend of sorts in hooker-next-door Stevie, which is such a Jennifer Jason Leigh role that the filmmakers have thrown up their hands and hired Jennifer Jason Leigh. He also nurses a shy crush on Marie (Spanish actress Aitana Sanchez-Gijon), a diner waitress and single mom to Nicholas (Matthew Romero Moore), who Trevor unwisely takes on an amusement park horror ride in one of the more unnerving sequences in ''The Machinist. One of the reasons the film is so thick with art-directed dread is that director Brad Anderson (''Next Stop Wonderland," ''Session 9") has little to work with in the way of story. As Trevor spirals downward into insomnia and terror, he becomes obsessed with tracking Ivan, who drives around cackling in a red convertible. That and the melting of the line between reality and hallucination are the only action during the film's back nine, and while Trevor can't figure out what's happening, you very probably will. Night Shyamalan, ''The Machinist" needs a payoff commensurate with its set-up, and like ''The Village," it doesn't deliver. . . . read all

Just about every review you'll read begins with the facts of Christian Bale's unfathomably disturbing 63 lbs weight loss to play central character, Trevor Reznik. The Machinist opens at night with Reznik preparing to dispose of a body wrapped in an old carpet, near what appears to be an abandoned industrial estate. He is caught midway through by the glare of an inquisitive guard's torch. Tellingly, for a film that is in essence a journey through one man's disjointed mental state, the film then resorts to flashback to provide that unsettling opening with a backstory. Reznik becomes convinced that there is a conspiracy against him, and with good reason. After the accident, sinister Post-It notes start appearing on the door of his refrigerator, bolstering his conviction that Miller is about to precipitate an 'accident' by way of revenge. As Reznick begins to unravel, his growing neurosis finds solace in the occasional company of two women. Bale is fascinating and I challenge anyone not to be captivated with his chillingly 'real' perception of a lonely paranoid insomniac. The movie instantly pulls you into its web of mystery and curiosity that captivates you throughout though letting itself down a little in its anti-climatic conclusion. This is a movie to be watched and will not be forgotten in a hurry. It's quite funny that nobody has yet cared to mention Cronenerg's "Spider". The two films are so similar in topic and emotional strength! Though I love Fienne's performance and generally adore the "Spider", now I can't tell which of the movies is better. Bale climbs rapidly in my top-list. Don't read any reviews if you want to see this movie. Don't see this movie if you can avoid it. Builds as a great mystery and collapses at the end into a pathethetic morality tale. . . . read all

Gaunt, withdrawn, smoking cigarettes like a chimney Reznick is a mess, and with ribs protruding like an Ethiopian victim of hunger it isn�t like anyone isn�t taking a note. His only solace comes in the arms of girlfriend and lady of the night Stevie (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a woman desperately subtle in her ploys to get Trevor to deal with whatever is ailing and reducing him to a shell. But Reznick�s longings to acquiesce to these demands take a back seat when a mysterious co-worker named Ivan (John Sharian) appears to make his life a paradoxical mystery. It seems he�s the only one can see the bald-headed ruffian, and when an workplace accident causes the near-death of a former friend (Michael Ironside) Trevor is sure Ivan and his corporate masters must be responsible. But are they, or is this just a half-baked conspiracy theory cooked up in Reznick�s increasingly fatigue-riddled mind? Like Mulder would often tell Scully, the truth is out there, but the more the skeletal blue collar employee learns the less he finds he really wants to know. The Machinist,� the latest from �Happy Accidents� and �Next Stop Wonderland� director Brad Anderson, is one seriously fked up movie. Like �The Twilight Zone� on acid, nothing here is what it seems and the more characters push towards the truth the more confusing and cryptic it all becomes. Twisting backwards and forward through time and with apparently minor characters slowly revealing themselves to be major players, this is the twistiest twister since David Lynch decided to take a cruise down �Mulholland Drive. And while I�m not entirely sure I liked it, �The Machinist� certainly held my attention, getting me as greasy and grimy as the main character as he trawls the gutters looking for all the elusive answers. The film was written by Scott Kosar , directed by Brad Anderson , and starred Christian Bale . It was produced by the Fantastic Factory label of Filmax and Castelao Productions (Spain). American city, the film was shot in its entirety in, or just outside of, Barcelona , Spain . Brad Anderson hurt his back during filming and directed much of the film while lying on a gurney . Christian Bale starved himself for over 4 months prior to filming, as his character needed to look drastically thin. Allegedly his eating consisted of one can of tuna and an apple each day (approximately 275 calories), although there are conflicting reports on this. Scott Kosar stated in the DVD commentary that he was influenced by Dostoevsky 's The Double: A Petersburg Poem . There are other relations to the works of Dostoevsky: Reznik is shown reading Dostoevsky's The Idiot . Reznik's imagined alter ego is named Ivan, a possible reference to the character Ivan Karamazov, who is racked with guilt, goes insane, and has nightmares of the devil in Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov . In addition, when Reznik is riding the 'Route 666' attraction one of the faux movie marquees reads Crime and Punishment . Reznik's love of a prostitute also reflects the main character's love of a prostitute in Crime and Punishment . Nicholas, the epileptic boy, may have been taken from The Idiot , where the protagonist, whose patronymic is Nikolayevich, is epileptic.
