Storyline

Story Summary:	Bob Lee Swagger, one of the world's great marksmen and the son of a Congressional Medal of Honoree, is a loner living in the Rockies. He's left the military, having been hung out to dry in a secret Ethiopian mission a few years before, when he's recruited by a lisping colonel to help find a way that the President of the US might be assassinated in one of three cities in the next two weeks. He does his work, but the shot is fired notwithstanding and Bob Lee is quickly the fall guy: wounded and hunted by thousands, he goes to ground and, aided by two unlikely allies, searches for the truth and for those who double-crossed him. All roads lead back to Ethiopia.

Summary:	As the hero of Shooter, Mark Wahlberg narrows his eyes into a piercing stare, delivers his bite-sized chunks of dialogue under his breath, and maintains a constant state of muscle flex so that each vein in his ropy arms sticks up like a speed bump on an elementary school driveway. Wahlberg even boasts the ideal name: Bob Lee Swagger. The surname ensures he's all attitude. The fact that he goes by three monikers means he's a bona fide presidential assassin, situated in a class above Lee Harvey Oswald. This comes in handy when Swagger, a trained sniper hiding out after a botched military assignment, is coaxed back into action by Col. Isaac Johnson (Danny Glover, still getting too old for this stuff). An internal document leaked to Johnson suggests that our nation's leader will be shot while speaking in Baltimore, Philadelphia, or Washington, D. Swagger is recruited to scope out the cities and search for flawless sight lines. Everyone can see a major setup coming. On the day of the assassination attempt, shots are fired. The president survives but another crucial target is hit. Johnson and crew frame Swagger, and Shooter shifts from firing-range specifics to the broad pursuits of an angry, betrayed fugitive. The material was previously imagined in hardcover form (as Point of Impact) by Stephen Hunter, an author and full-time film critic for the Washington Post. Sadly, screenwriter Jonathan Lemkin ( Lethal Weapon 4 ) runs Hunter's complicated novel through a grinder, then mashes the meaty droppings into a convoluted cover-up involving federal witnesses and identifiable corpses. Swagger's deceased war buddy. As he tracks down the men responsible for his supposed crimes, Swagger traces blame through Johnson up the ladder to Sen. Shooter can't explain a thing about its action, but the picture moves quickly enough that you don't ask a lot of questions until the sprint is finished. For instance, why would Sarah, a third-grade teacher living in a Tennessee suburb, keep a sawed-off shotgun by her front door? And would Memphis really try an Internet chat room when researching information about specific military machine guns? And while we're talking about Memphis, how could he and Swagger drive a beat-up truck from Virginia to Montana overnight? . . . read all

One man kills himself, and there are two images of characters being tortured. There are also photos of people buried in a mass grave, and it's implied that the central female character has been tortured and raped. Families can talk about why these sorts of violent movies are appealing. After a movie like this, how do you feel? Do you feel more or less safe in the world? Is the violence necessary to convey the movie's message? Families can also discuss how to react when you're unhappy about how the government is acting. If you believe, as Bob does, that the government is corrupt, how do you deal with that? What do you think of Bob's choice? With a name like SHOOTER, you wouldn't expect this political thriller to be sedate and dignified. But you also might not anticipate the extent and graphicness of the movie's violence - or its unrelentingly depressing message. After he is reluctantly pressed back into service, Swagger is double-crossed again. With two bullets in him and the subject of a nationwide manhunt, Swagger begins his revenge, which will take down the most powerful people in the country. R, directed by Antoine Fuqua ( KING ARTHUR ) and adapted by Jonathan Lemkin ( LETHAL WEAPON 4 ) from a Stephen Hunter novel, has a lot of things going for it. T, this is a predictable and preposterous picture with more plot holes than Bonnie-and-Clyde's machine gun riddled car. Laughably bad at key story junctures, the movie is one that will have you and your friends afterwards ticking off all of the parts of the script that were completely ridiculous. When we first meet Army sniper Bob Lee Swagger (Wahlberg), he and his partner are on a dangerous mission in Ethiopia. When more hostiles show up than expected, the snipers' command post pulls out. Do they bother to tell the snipers they are leaving, since they are all in close communication? No, they cut the comm link and leave their shooters, to fend for themselves or die. The command center doesn't even tell their valuable snipers that they are leaving. This makes no sense and would never happen in the field. We then cut to three years later, when we meet up again with Swagger, who is now a disillusioned ex-serviceman who has turned into a distrustful hermit. Danny Glover plays Colonel Isaac Fitzsimmons Johnson. Johnson comes packing his Congressional Metal of Honor to impress upon Swagger that he is the real deal. Johnson wants Swagger to figure out how to assassinate the president at a distance of more than a mile. Johnson needs the plans, so his group, which turns out to operate at a high level in some unnamed government agency, can stop another assassin who is about to do the same thing. If you believe that Johnson is on the up and up, you would be the most gullible person on earth. Summary:	Shooter follows an ace marksman, formerly of the CIA, who has become a mountain recluse after the loss of his partner on a peace-keeping mission. Bob Lee Swagger is approached by government officials to help prevent the assassination of the current United States President. They've intercepted a report that someone was going attempt to kill the President with a sniper gun from a mile away. It's actually a very interesting thought. I'm wondering in reality if that would be possible. Does the secret service stake out locations as far as a mile away? If not, may-be they should. And you would have to think that with the advancement of technology, it's only going to become easier and more accurate. I hate to reveal any more of the plot, but unfortunately the next plot point is revealed in almost all the trailers and television advertisements. The whole thing turns out to be an elaborate set-up to frame Swagger, who escapes law forces on the land, air and water. Swagger is a your atypical revenge hero, always three steps ahead of everyone else. A combination of Jason Bourne, MacGyver and Jack Bauer (24), Swagger is a smart mouthed government trained assassin who is able to spout off cool sounding tech lingo while making a hospital grade pain reliever out of common grocery store items. I'm not quite sure Mark Wahlberg is ready to carry an action film on his back alone, and at times it shows. For instance, one slow motion shot of Walhberg walking away with an American flag in the background had people laughing out loud. And I'm sure that's not what the filmmakers intended. Michael Pena is incredibly adept at playing the sympathetic inexperienced sidekick character. He's unfortunately been unable to capture the same lightning in a bottle with his last few films. And while Shooter is fun, it's nowhere near the level of his 2001 crime drama. The story, which is held together with duct tape, seems to be almost directly stolen from last season's 24 (or the first season, since the show seems to repeat many of the same situations). You even get the obligatory torture scene. The whole scenario is so over-the-top ridiculous, but somehow manages to be mildly entertaining. . . . read all
