Storyline

Story Summary:	While traveling on vacation through the country of Northeastern of Brazil by bus, the American Alex Trubituan, his sister Bea Tribituan and their friend Amy Harrington meet the also foreigners Pru Stagler, Finn Davies and Liam Kuller after an accident with their bus. They follow a track through the woods and find a hidden paradisiacal beach. They decide to stay in the place drinking beer and dancing funk and parting with the locals and they meet the amicable Brazilian teenager Kiko. They are drugged with "Bom Dia, Cinderela" (translation: Good Morning, Cinderella - a trick used by smalltime crooks to steal naive people) and when they wake up, they are practically naked, with all their belongings, clothes, money, jewels, passports, backpacks etc. stolen. They walk to a small village trying to find a police station, they get into trouble with the dwellers and they are helped by their acquaintance Kiko, who leads them to his uncle's isolated well-equipped cabin in the woods to wait for the next bus two days later. Along the night, Kiko's "uncle" arrives with his friends and the group discloses the sinister intentions of the newcomers.

Summary:	After a terrifying bus accident maroons a diverse group of young adventure travelers in a remote Brazilian beach town, they slowly discover that the white sand beaches and lush jungles are concealing a darker, unsettling secret. I believe I was well prepared for TURISTAS, which definitely helped in making it more enjoyable. Everyone keeps comparing the film to HOSTEL, which is a valid and yet completely inaccurate association. About a third of the way through the movie I came to the realization that the reason TURISTAS is so f-cking good is the screenplay. Through the entire movie I kept thinking to myself �man this is probably one hell of a read! The characters were well developed, a lot of the situations were pretty damn realistic and the pacing of most of the film was fantastic. I don�t want to act like this is the �perfect� horror thriller, because there were some problems. One problem was in the pacing of a chase sequence, which knowing Stockwell�s track record made complete sense (yes, he loves the water). There�s an unbelievable underwater cave chase that goes on for just a bit too long. The underwater cinematography was stunning and gorgeous, but at some point it needed to be clipped just a tad. And even though most of the situations were highly believable, there were a few that made me scratch my head; but sometimes you have to assume people don�t always act logically. Speaking of acting, the main villain in the film is superb. Although there�s a useless sequence early in the film showing us just how �bad� he is, it was remarkable how well developed he was. In one of the most intense sequences of the film, while cutting into one of our main characters on a surgical table, our villain gives what usually is a laughable monologue by explaining to another restrained tourist what he�s doing and why he�s doing it. Usually a monologue of this nature is followed by gallons of laughter by audience members, but the way in which he explains his devilish plans almost makes you agree with him. This scene in particular is the backbone of TURISTAS and if it failed, the entire movie as a whole would have failed. . . . read all

Summary:	"I wanna go home," a young woman whimpers in the first scene of "Turistas. She's strapped to an operating table, and to judge from her muffled shrieks and the malevolent-looking figure reflected in her pupil, the procedure under way is something other than routine. Thus begins the first release from Fox Atomic (20th Century Fox's new genre division), a wholly predictable bit of slasher unpleasantness and a muddled cautionary tale on the American propensity for foreign misadventures. Set on the beaches and in the rain forests of rural Brazil, the movie is a scenic variation on this year's "Hostel," which devised some gruesome fates for Ugly Americans at play in the former Eastern Bloc. The stereotypical Brazilian backdrop of free-flowing caipirinhas and bikini-clad babes is a natural fit for the teen-horror genre, where the karmic laws are rooted in a deep, punitive puritanism. The bumbling British sex tourists will be duly sacrificed. But not before the buxom blond whose only memorable line is "Would you guys mind if I went topless? "Turistas" seeks to exploit the current craze for torture-porn, but it lacks the relentless sadism of the "Saw" franchise. More than half the movie is dull buildup, as the lambs (clueless gringo tourists, thrown together after a bus accident) are herded slowly to the slaughter (an organ-harvesting mad doctor). This is the first horror effort from director John Stockwell, a pro at aquatic voyeurism ("Blue Crush," "Into the Blue"). Here he hurries through the gross-out centerpiece as if himself grossed out and reverts to what he knows best. "Turistas" climaxes with a long, dark pursuit through a warren of underwater caves. The intent may be to induce claustrophobia, but the sequence is so murky and disjointed that it inspires only confusion. Iraq, Americans are increasingly viewed as imperialist aggressors. Discovering a beachside cabana bar off the beaten path they, along with Bea�s friend Amy (Beau Garrett), the sexy Pru (Melissa George) and rowdy Brits Finn (Desmond Askew) and Liam (Max Brown), decide to spend a few days in this out-of-the-way paradise instead of sitting on their butts waiting for aimlessly for transport to their hotel. Not only do they wake up the next morning on the beach with their belongings, including their passports, stolen, they soon discover they�ve been setup for a bit of gruesome kidnapping involving a little bit of deadly organ removal. Soon they�re running for their lives from a group of Brazilian thugs wishing to sell their hearts (and their livers, kidneys, so on, so forth) to the highest bidder. With few weapons, no belongings and little knowledge of the jungles their escaping through the group�s chances of survival is slim, but just because that�s the case doesn�t mean they�re still not going to give it the old college try. The new movie �Turistas� is a balls-to-the-wall thriller with absolutely nothing new to offer or anyplace different to go that we haven�t already seen a thousand times before. A person going to this knows who is going to live and who is going to die after the first ten minutes, the only real question being how beaten up and mangled the survivors are going to be before they finally catch a ride out of Brazil. Writer Michael Arlen Ross� debut screenplay isn�t exactly original, and if you go in expecting to be amazed by the twists and turns prepare to be severely disappointed. Yet somehow, someway and every other angle in-between, �Turistas� is a fun little ride. Summary:	The posters say Turistas Go Home . I say, "Moviegoers stay home. The marketing made this out to be another film in the tradition of Saw and Hostel . Indeed it was related to that pedigree, for better or worse. For those looking for the splash of the red stuff, it would be best to look elsewhere; for those looking for a good movie, don't even bother considering this mess. Turistas is a virtual clone of Hostel . It starts with some friends on a vacation in Brazil. Their trip leads them to a bar right on the beach, a bar that is beyond believable, and with good reason. The group is robbed and left on the beach. They go to town, have a run-in with some kids and are led to a secluded house, where all hell breaks loose. Some people die, others live, then the credits roll. Well, that pretty much sums up the story. The movie will keep you waiting on the edge of your seat, waiting for something to happen. There are some things that the filmmakers forgot when they decided to make a horror movie, in particular in the current popular style of the torture film. They forgot an interesting killer. Split into three acts, Turistas is timed to the 25-30 minute mark. The first third of the movie follows the tourists as a bus crash leads to new friendships which leads to partying on the beach. This ends as they are robbed, leading them to wander around before hooking up with a local who promises safety while they're waiting for help. Part two ends with the arrival of our bad guy with designs on our intrepid tourists. The third act, where the majority of the action is set, features the only bloody scene (which was already glimpsed during the opening credits). Most of the climactic action takes place during a dimly lit underwater cave chase; it felt like a third rate take on the Descent caves, before ending on a happy note that doesn't have any feeling to it. I guess it wasn't a complete loss. I did think that Josh Duhamel ( Las Vegas ) had sufficient charisma as our lead hero, Alex. It did seem like an extension of his Las Vegas character, but it works, the loose humor covering a more serious center. There is also the presence of the lovely Olivia Wilde and Melissa George; they certainly bring an extra something to the screen. It is just too bad it wasn't in a better movie. . . . read all
