Story Summary:	In the midst of World War II, the battle below the seas rages. The Nazi's have the upper edge as the Allies are unable to crack their war codes. That is, until a wrecked U-boat sends out an SOS signal, and the Allies realise this is their chance to seize the 'enigma coding machine'. But masquerading as Nazi's and taking over the U-boat is the smallest of their problems. The action really begins when they get stranded on the U-boat.

Summary:	Actually, U-571 (Universal Pictures) is just what a submarine movie is supposed to be, testosterone fueled, with torpedoes a plenty and lots of sweaty sailors running around barking orders like "dive" and "surface" and sacrificing themselves in all directions for the sake of their secret mission. Probably not, but director Dino De Laurentiis does navigate through potentially schmaltzy seas and has delivered an exciting and believable Memorial to the sailors of WW2 who helped preserve the freedoms that today are often taken for granted. The plot of U-571 is a fairly typical undersea cat-and-mouse game between a crippled submarine and enemy destroyers that are out to see it remains underwater permanently. Commander Dahlgren, the chief commanding officer of a World War I submarine that's older than many of the men aboard her. "She's old, but she'll hold," Dahlgren says, presumably of his vessel and not U-571 's story line. Whatever, both are given another shot at glory in 1942. Next on the scene is Matthew McConaughey as Lt. Tyler, an all too eager young officer upset that he hasn't been given a boat of his own to order around. Dahlgren and Tyler are assigned a keen crew of enlisted men and set sail on a secret mission to recover an Enigma machine from a crippled German U-boat (the Mercedes of submarines). Enigmas, which were real-life devices used by U-boats to communicate stealthily and with deadly efficiency. Also along for the ride is David Keith, last seen hanging around in An Officer and a Gentleman . Keith plays Marine Major Coonan, a CIA man in charge of training Tyler's boarding party to successfully capture the Enigma, at any and all costs. While Tyler and company are evacuating the enemy sub after successfully securing the Enigma, a second U-boat, sent to rescue the U-571, sinks the American sub, killing all aboard. Tyler and a handful of men are left stranded on the badly damaged enemy sub, which they must somehow repair, despite all instruments and machinery being labeled in German. The fun and games don't end there as the Americans must still survive heavily patrolled enemy waters and get themselves and the Enigma device to England. The main plot of the movie, thought completely fictional, works well and maintains a viewers interest. However, it is sure to raise a lot of controversial discussion as it was the British and not the Americans who recovered the Enigma Machine in World War II. Unlike standard submarine movies U-571 is full of twists and turns, especially in the first hour. Because of this U-571 is definitely a film that you have to concentrate in otherwise you'll miss a lot of vital information. It is obvious that writer-director Jonathan Mostow has researched U-571 well as the nail-biting tension is ever present in the confines of a cramped submarine with a very stressed crew. Mostow's strongest point in this film would be his directing which keeps any viewer tuned in and on the edge of their seats. The camera work is brilliant and Mostow in several scenes keeps the viewer guessing what will come next in this nail-biting epic. The most notable sequence occurs when a Nazi Destroyer is dropping depth charges to try and kill the US Navy Crew. One second the viewer is watching a depth charge mercilessly head for the submarine and the next moment the viewer is watching the reaction of the Navy Crew. Summary:	I�m still chuckling over the unrealistic dialogue of U-571. And there were no surprises here. I knew who was going to die, as soon as an introduced character got his �dramatic� close-up. Except for McConaughey, of course, who got plenty of those soap operaish zoom-ins. Jonathon Mostow would fit right in with that genre, and fare much better, I reckon. Soaps don�t falsely promote themselves as intellectual bouts of entertainment, which address serious issues. Conaughey has given his worst performance to date, except for when he wasn�t acting (like when the set tossed him about or when water was pouring down on him. I really believed his portrayal of admonishment). It looks as though he�s regressed to his Lone Star days. And he obviously didn�t bother to research the psyche of the military man in combat - too much melodrama and overacted fear. Any woman, who has been intimate with a military man, knows fully well how those men truly operate (this is how I credit my expertise). He pulled off the pouty, disgruntled-child-that-didn�t-get-his-way quite well in the beginning, though. But, then again, that�s not a far cry from his true nature. It really just proves what sort of a wuss he truly is. Did someone realize that the scene wasn�t clear enough to the audience, and decided that we had to be brought up to the emotional level that the writers were hoping to achieve? Hit us over the head a little more next time, will you? I certainly hope my chuckles and belly aching laughs didn�t interfere with the other four audience members� enjoyment of the film. I guess the old fogies were just too numb to notice. It was just a lousy four bucks blown. Conaughey�s recommendation to see another flick again? America did a lot in the war. But the way some directors on its as if no-one else fought. This move is FALSE about ENIGMA History. Jewish David Ayer do NOT KNOW history ! Shamelessly rips off both history and other sub-movies.
