Story Summary:	In this darkly karmic vision of Arizona, a man who breathes nothing but ill will begins a noxious domino effect as quickly as an uncontrollable virus kills. As he exits Arizona State Penn after twenty-one long years, Wilson has only one thing on the brain, leveling the score with career criminal, Mackey Willis. As eccentric and intuitive as he is vicious, Mackey's own perfected criminal game will play right into the path Wilson has set for him. With the help of a prison bus driver, Lee Marvin, Wilson acts as a catalyst, putting a plan into action that will bring an untimely end to Mackey Willis. The problem is, no plan is perfect. Meanwhile, an aimless bunch of Arizona twenty-nothings are cooking up a heist that will lead them to the same bank, with different intentions. Skilled at nothing beyond drinking, doing drugs and attending strip clubs, their plan is destined for immediate failure. Heavily armed, without a single identifiable clue, these boys are as blind as they are impulsive. With both plans loosely angled inward, the vengefully mystical presence of the Sonoran landscape will have its way and every solider will fall on his own sword.

Summary:	S DISPLAYS OF STUPIDITY Every country suffers from sequelitis at some point in time. As with those spurned by occidental production companies, Asian cinema has had its fair run of sequels in the past two decades. Some have topped the originals, some managed to entertain while being vastly inferior, and some have crashed and burned so extraordinarily bad you honestly wonder what the producers were smoking when they greenlit the film. But when it comes to sequels, I'd have to say Battle Royale II is to Japanese cinema what Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is to the Hollywood machine. Though branded a Kinji Fukasaku film, this is definitely Kenta Fukasaku's mess. Kinji unfortunately passed away near the beginning of the shoot). While Kenta adapted the original Battle Royale for the screen, with this film the son of Kinji is both writer and substitute director. Clearly lacking the expertise that made his father so great, Kenta has crafted a film that is as hackneyed as it is uninteresting. Battle Royale II takes place three years after the end of the first Battle Royale . It seems that after going on the lam with Noriko, the nonviolent Shuya has gone through a role reversal that would surprise all but the most ardent WWE fan. Declaring war on the world of adults, Shuya now heads up Wild Seven, a guerilla terrorism organization that blows up skyscrapers in the name of stickin' it to The Man. The adults have responded by reworking the entire rules of Battle Royale. Dubbed BRII, the system now focuses on using junior high kids for eliminating terrorist threats rather than weeding out the slacker element for the betterment of a modern Japanese society. The selected class is fitted in camouflage, given guns, and forced to work together as a covert ops unit to track down and kill Shuya. Danger zones and the exploding necklaces make a return, with the main catch being each kid is linked with a corresponding classmate of the opposite gender. Summary:	Wild West town in the middle of the desert while trying to make it to the Mexican border. As it turns out, the town is cursed, and our new arrivals, though tough cons they may be, are about to get a taste of supernatural toughness. But wait, not all the cons are bad guys. Handsome Travis (Billy Wirth) seems to be a swell enough fellow, and even claims to not be guilty of the crime he was convicted of. Lacy was one of the gang considering how little effort she makes (as in, none) to extricate herself from her captors. Lacy, who spends the first day of captivity in a tight top drenched in sweat as the party wanders about a desolate, sizzling landscape. In real life, of course, men who have already murdered another correctional officer would have little qualms about spending half an hour ravaging the lovely little darling. Then again, when our escaped cons run across a Western town that appears to quite obviously be stuck in time, their reaction is to go to the saloon and enjoy themselves rather than, you know, wonder what the heck is going on. The script by Thadd Turner is atrocious, and the actors are worst. Even the usually charming Ms. And while Vincent and Wirth are playing it low key, everyone else keeps mistaking screaming vulgarities for acting. Danny Trejo, playing the Old Man Who Knows Stuff. Trejo is in his usual not-acting-as-acting form, which is to say Trejo would be considered embarrassing if I ever considered him much of an actor to begin with. Which is a shame, because the movie has a cast that could be considered A-list in the world of B-movies. Cerina Vincent, Matt Schulze, Danny Trejo, and the always creepy Billy Drago, are known names. Of course, the film being just 76 minutes soaking wet might have something to do with its poor quality. Variety reports that actress Maria Bello has officially replaced Rachel Weisz for the upcoming "Mummy 3" movie. She'll be joining the returning Brendan Fraser, who has starred in all three. . . . read all

Summary:	The first is that Asian cinema has been at a great disadvantage to their western counterparts. At a time when Asia was still trying to come out of the shadow of World War II, America and other Western powers were already a dominant force in world cinema. The Asians had a hard time trying to find the balance between art and social commentary and simple entertainment. Asian films were shot on terrible filmstock. Many films were actually using filmstock that were dozens of years old. This usually resorted in grainy pictures and scratches on the film. Filmmaking was an expensive venture and required a lot of time and dedication, not to mention money. Although, as prefaced, its grainy filmstock leaves a lot to be desired. Unlike Welles, Kurosawa had neither the budget nor the technical resources at his disposal to film the movie the way he might have wanted to. Long story very short: a town is constantly under attack by bandits so they send out men to hire samurais to defend them. They find one samurai, who recruits others. Like the westerns and other movies that came after it, there is a seventh samurai (gunfighter, mercenary, etc. The change of scenery worked. Others have not been so lucky. After reviewing Akira Kurosawa's masterful "Seven Samurai" I thought I'd go back and review his other masterpieces. "Yojimbo" is similar to "Samurai" in many respects, but is also vastly different,. The above are my words, and probably the words of countless people upon discovering "Gohatto" (aka "Taboo"), a tale of homosexuality within a Samurai. "Tales of the Unusual" is essentially a "Twilight Zone"-inspired movie about 4 very different stories linked by a common sequence. But where other anthology movies usually have a constant theme. While it may be a Hollywood big-budget epic about an Asian (and thus, foreign) culture, "The Last Samurai", while picturesque and excellent on every technical level, is nonetheless strangely average. . . . read all
