Summary:	A dozen years ago, with the disturbing, graphic serial killer procedural "Seven," David Fincher staked his claim as one of the more intriguing young American directors. So it comes as something of a surprise that Fincher's latest, "Zodiac," is primarily a complex character study, despite the film's grim and gruesome subject matter. It's a role reversal of sorts for a director who normally emphasizes the brutal tension in his movies. Written by James Vanderbilt based on Robert Graysmith's nonfiction book, the intelligent thriller delves into the compulsive effect that the Zodiac killer case had on the Bay Area police detectives and journalists investigating it. Overlong and lacking dramatic focus, the film nevertheless captures the dark allure that the unsolved crimes had on the region over a 22-year period. Taunting police with threatening letters and ciphers sent to newspapers, the Zodiac terrorized Northern California by claiming responsibility for 13 murders. Combing through 2,500 suspects, the multi-jurisdictional manhunt is fascinating in its minutia and the ways the men respond to the pressures of pursuing a madman. Often, however, their stories tend to become jumping-off points for creating horror films. Vanderbilt and Fincher, on the other hand, are far more interested in the psychological elements, particularly the toll that reaches beyond the victims, although the story is sometimes overwhelmed by the vast amount of detail they shoehorn into the film. The filmmakers enhanced their characters mightily by assembling a top-drawer cast. Headed by Jake Gyllenhaal as Graysmith, the San Francisco Chronicle political cartoonist who would eventually become the primary author on the subject, Mark Ruffalo as lead San Francisco Police Department Inspector Dave Toschi and Robert Downey Jr. Chronicle crime reporter Paul Avery, the actors get at the heart of what drove these men and the price they paid for their commitment. So said a reporter who had lived in Vallejo, California during the late 1960s era of the Zodiac murders. He offered his recollection for The Patriot-News as the movie of this infamous case hit its first-weekend stride, and director David Fincher ( Se7en ) deftly recreates this very mix of tension and terror. While events are familiar to most crime buffs, the settings, choice of actors, polished atmosphere, and selected interactions are nevertheless satisfying. For newbies to this tale, the suspense alone should prove gripping. But beneath the surface, there's more. The self-dubbed Zodiac's crimes began with the fatal shooting of a pair of Vallejo teenagers on their first date. Later, he killed two women, one in Vallejo and another in Napa County, taking credit for all three incidents before his execution- style shooting of San Francisco cab driver Paul Stine in October 1969. Since he killed in several jurisdictions, before computers and fax machines were commonly used, he cleverly obstructed a unified investigation. Paul Avery, and Mark Ruffalo as lead investigator Dave Toschi, the film is structured as two distinct but connected stories: 1) the murders and their impact on the Bay area, and 2) one man's personal quest to unmask the killer. The transitions are smooth and the urgency lively as each key character makes both allies and enemies. Some lose their way entirely, victims of their inability to cope, while others find something essential in the scary events to care about. A few reviewers have complained that once investigation loses steam halfway through, the pace declines, but in fact it's at this point that the story reveals the demands and frustrations of due process — the way it really happens, contrary to how today's crime show writers pace their tales. An investigation like this was not easy and certainly not solvable with some quick deductions from obvious clues. What replaces the breathless pace we've grown used to is the way the various crime-solvers in this film brainstorm together for personal closure, recalling the clue-developing conversations from the classic film, All the President's Men . Summary:	Director David Fincher himself saw sheriffs' cars tailing his school bus in the '70s. Three decades later, Fincher and his crew met with many of the people involved with the mysterious serial killer named Zodiac, including two surviving victims of an attack and the cops who investigated the cases. This is a talking movie, a new experience for a director who doesn't much care what people have to say. If you want to see what someone is about, you look at what people do, what they say is how they want to be seen. Fincher had previously used the Viper Filmstream camera to shoot a commercial for Hewlett-Packard, and Michael Mann used it to shoot part of Collateral , but Zodiac is the first Hollywood feature shot entirely on the Viper system. Fincher, helped by digital shooting by Harris Savides, knows how to play up contrasts with lighting and chromatisms, as in the key scenes at the lake, at Washington and Maple, or the vintage cars and police motorcycles outside Original Joe's in the Tenderloin at two in the morning. In contrast to the cops is Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal), whose enthusiasm for the case grows unstopabble. I need to know who he is,” he tries to explain to everybody else. When famous attorney Melvin Belli (Brian Cox) is contacted by the killer, he tries to talk to him via television but nothing happens until Christmas when he receives another letter. Summary:	One of California's most infamous unsolved killing sprees has been turned into an uninvolving grind by director Alexander Bulkley and his co-screenwriter brother, Kelly Bulkley. "The Zodiac," based on the string of murders that terrorized the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960s and '70s, stars Justin Chambers as a Vallejo police inspector who becomes obsessed with cracking the case, to the detriment of his family. The film opens with the killing of a high school couple on a first date parked on an isolated road. Chambers' Matt Parish is put in charge of the investigation and is soon facing more murders and the written taunts of the killer. At home, his wife Laura (Robin Tunney) waits, as depicted by numerous shots of her performing domestic duties. The movie is so transparent that when Laura picks up a glass vase it's only a question of how long before something or someone startles her (but not the audience) and it crashes to the floor. The would-be psychological thriller devolves into a plodding domestic drama as Parish increasingly shuts out his family while becoming more baffled. As the Parishes' son Johnny, Rory Culkin mopes through the film doing the spooky-silent kid thing he did to much better effect in "Signs. Johnny is as obsessed by the case as his father, but nobody really notices or cares. Unfortunately, the film lacks the suspense and drama to carry the psychological burden placed on it by its makers.
